Bible studying can feel overwhelming for some, especially those who are newly Christians but it doesn’t have to be. Here are 5 Bible study tips that I have personally used to help me understand the Bible and grow in my spiritual walk:
Don’t bite off more than you can chew! : What do I mean by that? Many people think that they have to read an entire chapter or book to say they read their Bible efficiently and effectively – THIS IS NOT TRUE! I love reading my Bible but what really helped me was not feeling guilty if I only read a couple of verses. The Lord says to meditate on his Word, and we can’t do that if we are just trying to win some imaginary race. Read slowly, indulge in his word, digest it, and let it sink in. You may find that reading a couple of verses and reflecting on it throughout the day may help you to find better understanding. Don’t rush your reading or you might miss what the Holy Spirit wants to relay to you. Take your time - there are so many hidden mysteries in the Word of God, he wants you to be careful with his word so that you may fully receive what he has for you.
Use commentary: You are not disqualified from being knowledgeable in the Bible because you use commentary. Some folks suggest to read the Bible without it and let the Holy Spirit reveal (which works too) but don’t limit yourself. If you are having a hard time understanding scripture, the culture of the time, or the audience and need some help USE SCHOLARLY COMMENTARY. The Holy Spirit can still work within commentary, because the commentary is truly just breaking down the Word for you. It’s okay to need help sometimes.
Background check: Do a background check. It's easier to understand the books of the Bible when you know:
Who wrote it?
When was it written?
Who is the audience?
What's the purpose of this book?
Learning the background before reading the text can help you.
Write it down: If you have questions about certain scriptures write it down and investigate later. If you feel that a verse is really sticking out to you, write it down and allow the Holy Spirit to minister to you.
Holy Spirit: Most importantly allow the Holy Spirit to reveal the Fathers heart to you through scripture. You are not “hearing” things, do not dismiss him. If you get a revelatory thought from the Holy Spirit - make sure to write it down, and if he leads you down different passages of scripture follow him. You may be surprised at what you will find.
